What is the difference between frosted window film and acid-etched or sandblasted glass, and which is better for my NYC space?
Acid etching and sandblasting permanently alter the glass surface and cannot be undone without replacing the pane. Frosted window film achieves the same visual result at a fraction of the cost and can be removed or replaced if you want to update the design, change the coverage area, or restore full transparency. For NYC renters, co-op owners, and businesses in leased spaces, film is the only practical option – it requires no structural modification and leaves the glass completely intact when removed.
Can frosted film be applied to just part of a window - for example, only the lower half for street-level privacy?
Yes. Partial coverage is one of the most common applications we install in NYC. A popular configuration for ground-floor apartments and retail spaces is a band of frosted film covering the lower 36-48 inches of the window – enough to block the sightline of pedestrians while keeping the upper portion clear for natural light and views. We can cut the film to any dimension or shape, including custom patterns with frosted and clear alternating sections.
Does frosted window film provide any UV protection, or is it purely for privacy and aesthetics?
Frosted film does provide meaningful UV protection. Most frosted films we install block over 99% of UV light in the 300-380 nm range – the wavelengths most responsible for fading furniture, flooring, and artwork. This is a significant added benefit beyond privacy, particularly for NYC apartments and offices with south or west-facing exposures where direct sun causes accelerated interior fading throughout the year.
How long does frosted film installation take, and will I need to vacate the room during the process?
For a standard bathroom, office partition, or set of residential windows, installation typically takes 1-3 hours depending on the number of panes and complexity of the cuts. You do not need to vacate the room – our installers work with minimal disruption and clean up the workspace before leaving. The film requires up to 30 days to fully cure, during which time minor haziness or small water pockets may be visible. These resolve on their own without any intervention.
Will my NYC co-op board or building management need to approve frosted window film installation?
For interior applications – bathroom windows, interior glass partitions, office doors – approval is generally not required since the modification is not visible from the building exterior. If the frosted film is applied to windows facing the street or building courtyard and changes the exterior appearance of the glass, some co-ops may request prior written approval. We provide a product spec sheet and sample swatch to support any board submission and can confirm in writing that the installation is fully reversible if required.
Can frosted film be installed over existing window film, or does previous film need to be removed first?
Existing film must be removed before frosted film is applied. Layering films compromises the adhesive bond and typically results in bubbling, peeling edges, and reduced longevity. Our IWFA-certified installers will inspect the glass during the consultation visit and, if previous film is present, include professional removal in the project scope before applying the new frosted film to a clean glass surface. Removal is performed with heat and appropriate solvents to avoid scratching or damaging the glass.
