Performance Notes:

  • Performance results are calculated using NFRC methodology and LBNL Window software, applied to 1/4″ (6mm) clear glass, and are subject to variations within industry standards and only intended for estimating purposes. This data is provided for informational purposes only and is subject to normal manufacturing variances.
  • Performance results for glare and fade reduction are calculated by comparing filmed glass to that of untreated glazing.

Safety First

In case of accidents or severe weather, shattered glass can pose a significant threat. Armorcoat® Clear Safety Window Film helps hold broken glass together, reducing the risk of injuries from flying glass shards.

FAQ
Which Armorcoat thickness is right for my NYC property - 4 mil, 8 mil, or 14 mil?

Thickness selection depends on your specific risk concern. Thinner options like 4-7 mil are well suited for residential windows where the primary goal is glass retention during accidental breakage. Mid-range 8-10 mil is popular for retail storefronts and ground-floor commercial spaces where smash-and-grab theft is a concern. The 14 mil is typically specified for high-security applications – embassy-level protection, schools, or buildings with blast mitigation requirements. During your free consultation, our certified installer will assess your exposure and recommend the appropriate spec.

Safety window films like Armorcoat require up to 90 days to fully cure – longer than standard solar films. During this curing period, you may notice minor water pockets, slight haziness, or uneven clarity between panes. This is completely normal and temporary. The film reaches its full structural bond and rated impact-resistance performance only after the curing period is complete. We advise clients not to clean or apply pressure to the film surface for at least 30 days post-installation.

Yes. Company founder Andriy Mykyta completed Solar Gard’s official Technical Consultation Training on Armorcoat Safety & Security Film on February 25, 2022 – certified by Solar Gard’s General Manager and Architectural Business Segment Manager for the Americas. This is a manufacturer-level authorization, not a generic installer course, which means proper product selection, installation technique, and edge treatment are all performed to Solar Gard’s own standards.

For interior-applied clear safety film, most NYC co-op and condo boards do not require approval since the film is invisible from the exterior and does not alter the building’s appearance. However, if your building has a proprietary lease or house rules covering window modifications, we recommend submitting the product spec sheet as a precaution. We provide the Armorcoat technical datasheet and our COI to support any board submission at no extra charge.

In most cases, existing film must be removed before Armorcoat is applied. Layering films compromises the adhesive bond and can prevent the safety film from achieving its rated impact resistance – which defeats the purpose of the installation. Our technicians will inspect your current glass during the consultation and, if old film is present, include removal in the project scope before applying Armorcoat to a clean glass surface.

Clear safety film applied to the interior surface of a single-pane or the inner pane of a double-pane window generally does not void the glass manufacturer’s warranty, as the film does not affect the sealed insulating glass unit. However, applying any film to the outer pane of a sealed IGU can cause thermal stress and void that warranty. Our certified installer identifies your window type during the free consultation and confirms in writing which application method is appropriate for your specific glazing before any work begins.
